  • Kathie Cooper
    Kathie Ann Cooper, 56, a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Northeast Portland, died Oct. 18. There will be a public viewing at St Rose Church Friday, Oct. 23, 4 p.m.–6 p.m. (50 person max at any given time). A rosary (live-streamed at https://www.facebook.com/strosepdxchurch/) starts at 6 p.m. following the viewing. Due to Covid restrictions attendance at the rosary will be by invitation only.
  • Lloyd Lawrence Ferschweiler, 95, died October 15. There will be a funeral Mass Thursday, Oct. 22, at Sacred Heart Church in Gervais. The rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the Mass at 11 am. 
  • Sr. Emily Ann Herbes
    ASTON, Penn.—Franciscan Sister Emily Ann Herbes (formerly Sister Marie Antoinette), 84 died at Assisi House Oct. 14. There was a funeral Mass at Assisi House.
  • Reta Van De Hey
    FOREST GROVE — Reta Van De Hey, 92, a resident at Jennings McCall Retirement Community, died Oct. 9, family members by her side. There will be a funeral Mass at noon Friday, Oct. 23, at St. Anthony’s Church in Forest Grove. COVID-19 will impact attendance.
  • Joan Moreland
    MOUNT ANGEL — Joan Alice Forbes Moreland, 90, a longtime parishioner of The Madeleine Parish in Northeast Portland and more recently a parishioner at St. Mary Parish in Mount Angel, died Oct. 1, surrounded by her children. A funeral Mass will be held at a later date due to COVID concerns.
  • Thomas Barwick
    Thomas Unitas Barwick, 59, died May 6 in Happy Valley. Mr. Barwick, a parishioner at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Southwest Portland, was vice president and general manager of Sheridan Fruit Co.
  • Father Gerald Quintal dies at 81
    UPDATED OCT. 13, 3:10 P.M. — Father Gerald Quintal, a pastor who had long stays at parishes and who was former vocations director in the Archdiocese of Portland, died Oct. 4 in his sleep. He was 81. There will be a private graveside service.
  • Donald Gorger
    Donald Edward Gorger, 83, of Portland died Sept. 11 with his wife, Sandra Gorger, by his side. A private funeral Mass will be held at St. Rita Catholic Church followed by a private Rite of Committal service with Military Honors at Willamette National Cemetery.
  • Leo Mihm
    Leo Bernard Mihm, 90, of Happy Valley, died Sept. 8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Oct. 9, at St John the Apostle Church in Oregon City.
  • Maura Chavez
    Maura Chavez, the mother of Franciscan Father Jorge Hernandez, died suddenly of a heart attack Sept. 13 in Guanajuato, Mexico. There was a funeral Mass Sept. 15, at Holy Trinity Church in Guanajuato, followed by the burial.
  • Karen Bondaruk
    Karen Bancroft Bondaruk, 74, died of natural causes Sept. 4 in Portland. There was a private service.
  • Gertrude Helene Holtzinger Cotter
    Gertrude Helene Cobery Holtzinger Cotter died Sept. 24, a few days shy of her 95th birthday. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Philip Catholic Church in Dallas with her son, Father William Holtzinger, presiding. Concelebrating were Fathers Michael Walker, John Kerns and Michael Johnston. The family was also honored by the attendance of Archbishop Alexander K. Sample and Archbishop Emeritus John Vlazny in choir.
  • Fliegle Walters
    TIGARD — Fliegle Martin Walters, 87, died Sept. 1. There will be a Celebration of Mr. Walters’ life online, hosted by Spirit of Grace in Beaverton, Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
  • Scott Niedermeyer
    Scott Martin Niedermeyer, 58, loving husband and father of four beautiful children, died Sept. 15. A private Mass for family and close friends will be held at St. Mary Cathedral in Northwest Portland at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. The Mass will be viewable via ZOOM.   • Anthony Sarsfield
    CENTERVILLE, Wash. — Anthony Sarsfield, 87, died Aug. 29 from complications of prostate cancer in Goldendale, Washington. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish in Goldendale. There was a graveside service.
  • OREGON CITY — Lucy Thiel, 75, of Oregon City, died at home Aug. 27, surrounded by family. 
  • Nancy Andresen
    ALOHA — Nancy Andresen, 85, died Sept. 3. There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at St. Cecilia Church in Beaverton, where she was a parishioner.
  • Fr. Thomas Lester
    OAKLAND, Calif. —Redemptorist Father Thomas Lester, 89, of the Diocese of Oakland, died Aug. 9 in Auburn, California.
  • Charlene Miller
    GEARHART — Charlene Marie Katana Miller, 75, beloved wife, mother and grandmother (Nonna) died Aug. 24 in Gearhart. There was a funeral Mass with a rosary at St. Philip Benizi Church in Oregon City.
  • Genny Nelson
    Genevieve “Genny” Nelson, 67, co-founder of Sisters of the Road Cafe in Portland’s Old Town and a tireless voice for Portland’s marginalized, died Aug. 19. She had suffered from diabetes since age 8.
