STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Silverton resident Elisha Valladares-Cormier, a junior communication arts major at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, has been selected to receive the Higginbotham Leadership Scholarship from Franciscan University’s Center for Leadership. The $5,000 prize is awarded to a full-time undergraduate who is an active participant in the center, which seeks to form Catholic leaders through study, rigorous discussions, guest speakers, and an annual trip to Washington, D.C.

Valladares-Cormier will complete a senior capstone project in the fall 2019 semester. In addition to his work for the center, Valladares-Cormier is a resident assistant at St. Junipero Serra Hall and a staff writer for The Troubadour, the University’s student newspaper.

“Being a resident assistant is a ministry that combines my leadership skills and desire to serve others,” Valladares-Cormier says. “I have been able to interact with the residents of my hall and, along with the other RAs, strive to help residents have the best Franciscan University experience they can.”

After graduation, Valladares-Cormier plans to pursue a career in journalism, hopefully for a Catholic publication, or in diocesan communications. This summer, he is an intern with the Archdiocese of Portland Communications Office and the Catholic Sentinel.
