Catholic Youth Organization of the Archdiocese of Portland last month inducted one of the nation’s great distance runners into the CYO Hall of Fame. Galen Rupp, an Olympic medalist, got a start in track and field with his CYO team at All Saints School in Northeast Portland, where his mother was the coach. When he was in eighth grade, he helped the All Saints team to a Meet of Champions title.

He would go on to set records at Central Catholic and the University of Oregon.

Sister Krista von Borstel, executive director of CYO, called Rupp an “inspirational, faith-filled, world class athlete.”

He is an 11-time national distance running champion who won Olympic silver in the 10,000 meters in London in 2012 and bronze in the marathon in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He won the 2017 Chicago Marathon and the 2018 Prague Marathon before undergoing foot and ankle surgery and now is aiming for the 2020 Olympics.

Rupp is the keynote speaker for the Oct. 15 Champion of Faith CYO benefit dinner in Portland.
