Two men with science and technology backgrounds who entered the Catholic Church as young adults will be ordained priests of the Archdiocese of Portland Saturday, June 2, 11 a.m. at St. Mary Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Northwest Portland.

Deacon Brent Crowe grew up in the Applegate Valley in southern Oregon. He attended Applegate School and Hidden Valley High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in general science from Oregon State University in 1991.

For 13 years prior to entering Mount Angel Seminary, he worked as a fish biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. During that time, he entered the Catholic Church through Sacred Heart Parish in Medford and began to discern a call to the priesthood.  

He entered Mount Angel Seminary in 2011. His pastoral ministry assignments have included Marian Estates Nursing Home, Central Catholic High School, MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility, Queen of Peace Parish in Salem and the Oregon State Hospital in Salem.

He completed a pastoral internship at St. Mary Cathedral Parish in Portland.  

After he was ordained as a transitional deacon last May, Deacon Crowe served at St. Cecilia Parish in Beaverton for the summer. His most recent assignment has been as deacon at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Northeast Portland. He will be celebrating his Mass of thanksgiving at Sacred Heart Church in Medford Sunday, June 3, at 5 p.m.

Deacon Richard LeFaivre was born in 1966 in Columbia, Missouri, and moved to Beaverton as a youth. He attended Whitford Junior High and graduated from Beaverton High School in 1984.

He earned a bachelor’s in history from Lewis and Clark College in 1989 and spent a year abroad studying at the University of Edinburgh. He worked for Lewis and Clark College in the information and technology department and was a manager for CompUSA and Office Depot before entering the seminary. He coached youth soccer for West Sylvan Middle School for 11 years and volunteered at the Goose Hollow Family Shelter.

He was baptized and entered the Catholic Church in 2008 at St. Clare Parish in Southwest Portland. He was ordained a transitional deacon at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome last year. 

At Mount Angel Seminary, he completed pre-theology courses in 2013. He then studied at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, earning a sacred theology baccalaureate from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in 2016.

Rev. Mr. LeFaivre currently is working on a Sacred Theology License in Spiritual Theology at the Angelicum in Rome. 

His pastoral ministry training has included assignments at St. Alice in Springfield, St. Mary in Mount Angel, St. Clare in Portland, the St. Francis International School in Rome, St. Mary Magdalene (the Madeleine) in Portland, and at the U.S. Naval Support Activity Naples in Capodichino, Italy. He completed a pastoral internship at St. Thomas More Parish in Portland and his clinical pastoral education at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, interning at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way. His current pastoral ministry assignment is with the University of Mary in Rome.
