ST. BENEDICT — Benedictine Father Bede Partridge, a monk of Mount Angel Abbey, died July 8. He was 93.
Father Bede was born in Pe Ell, Wash., on Oct. 19, 1921, to Stanley and Mary Ellen Collins, and grew up in Garibaldi. After serving in the Navy, he earned a chemistry degree from the University of Portland before entering Mount Angel Seminary in 1950. He became a monk of Mount Angel Abbey in 1954.
In addition to weekend pastoral assignments, Father Bede served as chaplain for the Benedictine Sisters at Queen of Angels Monastery. He taught chemistry and mathematics in the seminary high school at Mount Angel until its closure in 1979. Forever obedient to his abbot, he then earned a degree in library science and served as librarian and cataloguer at Mount Angel Abbey Library until 2009.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, in the Abbey Church at Mount Angel Abbey.
