Sister Mary Kay Lampert (Sr. Mary Sharon)

Sister Mary Kay Lampert (Sr. Mary Sharon), a sister of the Holy Names for 58 years, died July 1.

Born to Louis Joseph and Elma Marie Olsen Lampert in Portland, she attended Catholic and public schools, graduating from St. Mary’s Academy in 1953. That same year she entered the Holy Names novitiate.

Starting out in elementary schools she taught at St. Ignatius, Holy Redeemer and Cathedral schools in Portland, at St. Frederic in St. Helens, and St. Joseph in Salem. The bulk of her teaching career was at high schools, including Regis High School in Stayton, St. Mary’s Academy, Jesuit High School and 13 years at Central Catholic in Portland. She also served on the education faculties of Marylhurst College and the University of Portland.

Her volunteer work took her to the Northwest Pilot Project, the Burnside Community Council, as well as other humanitarian groups. Her concern for the victims of

AIDS led to her work with Our House.

A long time member of St. Ignatius Parish, she and her friend and colleague, Sister Rosemary Anne Parker, sponsored a monthly program for the senior members of the parish. They visited abbeys, parks, gardens, casinos, rivers and falls, and had great conversations and lots of food.

She is survived by her sister Joan, brother Jerry, two nieces, friends and other members of her religious community.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held in the Provincial House Chapel on July 11, at 11 a.m.  Memorial donations can be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names Retirement Fund, P.O. Box 411, Marylhurst, OR 97036.
