Father David Tobin, C.Ss.R.
WHITTIER, Calif. — Redemptorist Father David Tobin, who served for a time in the Archdiocese of Portland, died June 27 here after a heart attack. He was 77.
Father Tobin was born Feb. 15, 1937 in Fort Fairfield, Maine. He grew up in Ocean Beach, Calif., where the Carondolet nuns made an impression on him.
He followed his brother, Redemptorist Father Joseph Tobin into the seminary in 1951. He was ordained as a Redemptorist priest in 1963.
After completing Tirocinium at St. Alphonsus Parish in St. Louis, Father David taught and worked with young seminarians at Holy Redeemer College in Oakland, Calif from 1965 to '68. During this time, he also ran a summer camp on the Kenai Peninsula.
He served at St. Gerard Parish in Great Falls, Mont, from 1968 to '70, and then was assigned to St. Alphonsus Parish in Fresno, Calif., in 1970. He served as a missionary in California for the next 44 years.
He preached in Portland, Santa Barbara, Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley and Whittier.
A funeral Mass is scheduled at 11:15 a.m., Thursday, July 3 at St. Mary’s Assumption Church in Whittier, Calif.
