Anthonius Bosboom

Anthonius Bosboom, a member of St. Therese Parish in Northeast Portland, died June 17. He was 90.

Mr. Bosboom was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Forced by the German invasion to leave college he survived the war living in Utrecht with his family. He joined the Dutch Army after the war. He served 10 years eventually rising to the rank of captain. In the late 1940s, the Dutch army posted him to Jakarta, Indonesia, where he met May Marie Newman of Tillamook, a secretary in the U.S. Foreign Service. They married in 1952.

The couple lived in The Netherlands for four years while he continued to serve in the Army. In 1956, as Marie was carrying their first child, they decided to move to her home, and so Tony retired from the Army, left Holland and made Portland his home.

After working at Jantzen for several years, in 1968 the couple founded what Fabricland. They built the company to 92 stores across the West before selling the company in 1990. The couple opened Fabric Depot in East Portland in 1992, when Tony was already 69. Fabric Depot itself is still owned by family members. He retired in the early 2000s, not long after his wife preceded him in death. He later moved for health reasons to the senior living facility of Clare Bridge in Troutdale, where he lived contentedly for nearly 10 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Trudy Shurts, Portland and Lisa Faye Walseth, Los Angeles; four granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, at St. Therese Church, Portland.
