Ray Carl Silvander, who joined the Catholic Church at Easter 2013, died Dec. 30. He was 89.
Mr. Silvander was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Madison, S. D., to Carl Silvander and Helen Feenstra. He moved to California as a teenager where he enlisted in the U. S. Navy to serve in World War II. After the war, he visited Oregon and decided to stay. He first worked at Western Electric Co. and then moved to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission where his first job was as an undercover agent. Gradually he progressed through the ranks to Director of Enforcement Division and retired in 1979. He married Mary Lou Setera Hodel and settled in Clackamas County. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; children, Janice Searls and Michael Hodel; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and step-sister, Donna Persson.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Philip Benizi Church in Oregon City (Redland).
