MILWAUKIE — Donald Drain, a member of St. John the Baptist Church for 48 years, died Feb. 9. He was 85.
Mr. Drain was born July 21, 1929 in McCook, Neb. After moving to Portland in 1949, he worked in various jobs and sang with the Portland Symphonic Choir, Civic Theater and Portland Opera Company. In 1954, he married Josephine Anzalone. In 1960, he won auditions in Portland to sing with the San Francisco Opera. He sang bass/baritone roles for the next five opera seasons. He left the San Francisco Opera Company after the 1965 season and returned to Portland. He opened his own business, Don Drain Hearing Instruments, and retired in 1998. He directed the St. John the Baptist choir for 18 years and was cantor at 7:30 Mass for another 12 years.
He is survived by his wife; children, Matthew, Glenwood, Iowa; Philip (Toni); Christian, Beckley, W.Va.; Patrick (Chris); Kathleen Tuck; Eileen Sherrill (Dave); sister, Eileen Schulze; and 10 grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. John the Baptist; interment was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
