Richard Michael Padden died Jan. 17. He was 94.
Mr. Padden was born Oct. 21, 1919 , in Martins Ferry, Ohio. He attended Martins Ferry High School and worked for a year before attending Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon), where he graduated with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He joined the Navy after college and served as a lieutenant commander during WWII. He married Martha Alice Merkle in 1946 at St. Stephen Church in Portland. He worked for 65 years in the steel business.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tom, Rob and John; sisters, Anna Marie and Lois; infant son, Charles; and grandson, Jake Shearer. He is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years Martha; children, Sen. Michael (Laura), Spokane Valley, Wash., Marybeth (Wayne Nelson), Vancouver, Barbara (Dave Dalbotten), Edmonds, Wash., Nancy (Rich Kay), Kenmore, Wash., Richard (Laurie), Seattle, Peggy (Glen Shearer), Portland and Charlene (Tom Foley), Vancouver; 25 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
