Mark Thomas Moothart died Dec. 23. He was 86.
Mr. Moothart was born March 19, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Rose and Thurman Moothart. He grew up in Madison, S.D. He attended grade school and high school at St. Thomas School in Madison. Before entering the service, he attended college at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. He enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1945, was initially in infantry training and then attended special training at the Army Finance School in Fort Harrison, Ind. He served in the Army Finance Corps and was honorably discharged before moving with his family to Longview, Wash. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. Martin's College in Olympia, Wash., in 1949 with a major in accounting and minors in business administration, political science and philosophy. He married Alice Ann in 1949.
He served as an instructor of accounting and business administration at St. Martin's College from 1949 to 1951. For a short time, he worked at Georgia Pacific in Olympia, Wash. Then, later in 1951, he began his 36-year career with Niedermeyer-Martin in Portland. During his tenure, he held positions as office manager, director, general manager of Pacific Wood Treating (a subsidiary) and retired as CFO in 1987. He and Alice started their family while living in Lacey, Wash. They moved to Portland in 1951.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2010; grandson, Thomas; son-in-law, Bill Hice; and brothers, Don, Jack and Frank. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Mary Anne and Gordon Spezza, Jim and Cathy Moothart, Jerry and Teri Moothart, Carole and Kevin Muller, Nancy and Bill Hice†, Tim Moothart, Sarah and Tim McCool, Linda and Steve Ullman, Rose Moothart Barnum and John Moothart; and siblings and in-laws, Mary Schmidt (Fran), James "Bud" Moothart (Lenore), Marjorie Varner (Jack), William Moothart (Adalene), Delores Smith (Willy) and Laura Moothart (Jack); and 25 grandchildren.
