Sister Mary Kenny, OSF

TACOMA, Wash. — Franciscan Sister Mary Kenny (formerly Sister Anne Margaret) died in St. Ann Convent here on Dec. 16. She was 84.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Sister Mary had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 63 years. She entered the congregation in 1947, and professed her first vows in 1950. She earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Eastern Oregon State College in La Grande in 1974. Although Sister Mary began her years in ministry in the Diocese of San Bernardino teaching at St Edward School in Corona (1950-‘54), she ministered primarily in healthcare, first as a medical records librarian and later as a chaplain.

Sister Mary ministered for 22 years in the Diocese of Baker.  She served at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Baker from 1954-‘62 and again from 1963-‘68. She worked at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton (1974-‘78, 1979-‘81) and at St. Joseph Hospital in La Grande (1968-‘71). In the Archdiocese of Portland, she ministered at Mercy Rehab and Care Center in Roseburg (1998-2003).

Sister Mary is survived by nieces and nephews and by her Franciscan family.

All services will be held in St. Ann Convent, 6602 S. Alaska Street, Tacoma.  The vigil will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, Dec. 20, at 11:30 a.m. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
