Mary Clare Hammerton, a member of St. Jude Church since 1954, died Oct. 21. She was 78.
Mrs. Hammerton was born Aug. 15, 1935, to Henry and Lenore Hetherington. She and her family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1951 where she graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in 1953. She attended Del Mar College and earned a degree in radiologic technology, working for many years as an x-ray technician. She married James Hammerton in 1954 and they moved to Eugene in 1974. She earned a bachelor’s degree from University of Oregon in 1988, and went on to work at several local nursing homes as activity director.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981; and two children, Janice Worthington and Joseph Hammerton. She is survived by her children, John Hammerton, Castro Valley, Calif., and Jacqueline Young, Eugene; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A service was held at St. Jude Church in Eugene. Memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Church and St. Vincent de Paul Society.
