Father J. Alfred Carroll, S.J.

Jesuit Father J. Alfred Carroll died Sept. 11. He was 84.

Born Oct. 26, 1928, in Seattle to Emmett and Mary (Kelly) Carroll.  He graduated from Seattle Preparatory School in 1946 and entered the Jesuit Novitiate at Sheridan in 1946.  He was ordained in 1959, in Frankfurt, Germany.  Following ordination, Father Carroll taught at Seattle Prep and Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, Wash.). In 1972, Father Carroll began a long career at Gonzaga University in the Dean’s Office in the College of Arts and Sciences. 

With the fall of Saigon in 1975, Father Carroll saw a special need to assist refugees from Vietnam and began a program to help. He assisted hundreds of young refugees come to the United States and lobbied Congress to pass the Amerasian Homecoming Act of 1982.  For his advocacy, he was awarded an honorary doctor of laws by Gonzaga University in 1987. 

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jesuit Father Emmett Carroll, in 2013.  He is survived by his sister Joanne Sullivan, Lombard, Ill.; nephews and niece; seven grandnephews and grandnieces; cousins; and his brother Jesuits of the Oregon Province.
