Sister Theresa Stupfel (S. Mariella Rose), a vowed member of the Sisters of the Holy Names for 66 years, died Aug. 14. She was 86.
Sister Theresa was born the sixth child of Leo and Mary O’Rourke Stupfel, and grew up on a farm in McMinnville. She attended boarding school at St. Mary’s Academy. After graduating in 1945, she followed her sister Kathleen (at that time Sister Teresa Maureen) into the Holy Names community, taking the name Sister Mariella Rose.
She taught briefly, and then followed a lifetime in working in various Holy Names ministries. As a young sister she took charge of the cafeteria and dining room at Marylhurst College during summer sessions, planning menus and overseeing the operation of the facilities. She went on to work in the Oregon Provincial House infirmary, which prepared her for her next role as nurse at Holy Names Academy in Seattle. While there she learned the skill of printing, taking over the province print shop in Spokane.
When the Oregon province was divided, Sister Theresa went to Washington and provided secretarial help and managed the maintenance workers. Later she moved back to Holy Names Academy in Seattle, where she was the business manager, and ran the bookstore and food program.
Sister Theresa is survived by her sister, Sister Kathleen; brothers Frank and Joseph; many nieces and nephews; and her religious community.
A Mass was celebrated at the Provincial House Chapel. Memorial donations can be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names Retirement Fund, P.O. Box 411, Marylhurst, OR 97036.
