Elaine Heup died July 8. She was 84.
Mrs. Heup was born Nov. 5, 1928, to Julian and Alice Abbott in Klamath Falls. She became a Franciscan nun and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education. She taught at the K-12 level in Catholic schools in California and Oregon. In 1968, after 21 years as a nun, she left the sisterhood and began teaching in public schools, while remaining active in her church.
In 1980, she married Don Fenwick of Twin Falls, Idaho. He died in 1983. She managing Fenwick Electric and also managed hospice care in Twin Falls for a time. In 1990, she married Robert Heup, and they settled in Phoenix. Robert had multiple sclerosis and Elaine cared for him for 22 years until he died in 2012. She then moved to Eugene to be close to family.
She is survived by her brother Dean Abbott, Eugene; nieces and nephews; and numerous stepchildren and step-grandchildren from her two marriages.
A funeral Mass and reception will be held at 12:15 p.m., Thursday, June 25, at St. Mary Church in Eugene.
