Sister Dona Van Hoomissen (Sr. Bernice Marie) died May 2. She was 86.
Born in Portland to William Joseph and Wilhelmina Van Hoomissen, she attended St. Ignatius Church and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1944. She entered the Holy Names novitiate, made profession of vows in 1946 and began a ministry of teaching primary students across the state.
She began her teaching career in Eugene at St. Mary School. She continued teaching in Medford, St. Paul, and Bend. At St. Francis School, in Bend, she served as superior and principal. Returning to Portland and the surrounding area she taught at St. Ignatius, St. Peter in Newberg and finally to St. Joseph School in Salem as principal for the last seven years of her classroom ministry in Oregon. Along the way she earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Portland. After graduating, she taught for two years at St. Luke School in Seattle.
Called to parish ministry, she continued her education in the Corpus Program at Seattle University. This work took her to St. Francis in Portland, St. Francis in Bend, and nine years at St. Mary’s in Corvallis. After retiring, she worked as an aide in the Care Center and as a receptionist for the Provincial House, until failing health put an end to her active ministry.
She is survived by her sister, Sister Ida, many nieces and nephews and her religious community. A service was held in the Chapel of the Holy Names in Mary’s Woods in Lake Oswego.
