Holy Names Sister Mary Katharine McNassar died May 30. She was 72.
Born Aug. 27, 1940, she moved with her family to Denver, Colo., Cheyenne, Wyo. and in 1954, to Portland. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1958, and then professed her vows for the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in 1960.
Sister Mary worked as an educator in many Oregon and Washington schools. In Portland, she taught at Holy Redeemer, the Madeleine and Christie School and served as vice principal at St. Mary's Academy. She also served at St. Mary's in Eugene, St. Frederic in St. Helens, and in Spokane, where she was assistant superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Spokane Diocese. She earned a master's degree in educational psychology, and received her doctorate in psychology from Pacific University in 1988 and became a licensed clinical psychologist. She worked in private practice for several years, and at University of Portland. Following her retirement in 2005, Sister Mary continued to serve her family, friends and religious community as a caregiver.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John Leo McNassar Jr. and Patrick Maur McNassar; sister, Ann Celestine Zenner; sister-in-law, Jeanne Pauline McNassar; and four nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her brothers, James McNassar, Happy Valley; Thomas McNassar, (Jane), Auburn, Wash., Michael McNassar, (Heather), Sherwood; sisters, Alice McNassar, Portland, Maureen Zehendner (S. Michael), Fairview, Jeanne McNassar (Joe Digman), Portland and Kathleen Stewart (Randall), Milwaukie; brother-in-law, Walter Zenner; and sisters-in-law: Barbara "Mufti" McNassar, Portland; and Suellen McNassar, Chicago; 60 nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, June 7, at the Provincial House Chapel of the Holy Names at Mary's Woods, Lake Oswego.
