Charles Edward Gardner died Jan. 21. He was 83.
Mr. Gardner was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He graduated from Regis College in Denver in 1951 and attended the University of Colorado, earning a Ph.D. in medical microbiology. In 1954, he married Sara Mabry. In 1962, he moved to Portland where he took a position as an assistant professor of microbiology at OHSU. Later, he took positions in laboratory medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital and United Medical Laboratories. He later founded Medical Sciences Laboratory. Once retired, he became director of liturgies at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverton. After his wife passed away in 2003, he moved to Reedsport, where he was pastoral associate at St. John Church.
He is survived by his four children, Ellen, Elizabeth Stratte, Timothy and Michael; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and all six of his siblings.
