Fred John Vulin, local Catholic and journalist, died Nov. 16 of cancer. He was 57.
Mr. Vulin was born on May 29, 1955, to Ante and Grace Vulin in San Pedro, Calif. He was a 1973 graduate of San Pedro High School. In 1977, he received his bachelor's degree in journalism from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. While he was still in school, he worked as assistant sports editor and a feature writer at the San Luis Obispo Telegram-Tribune.
In his 36-year career he worked at several newspapers and had been a copy editor at The Oregonian for almost 30 years. Fred was a marathoner, cyclist and swimmer.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Haught; his sons, Ante and Nels; his mother, Grace; his sister, Miranda; his brother, Anthony; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A wake will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday, both at St. Mary's Cathedral in Northwest Portland. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Fred's name can be made to St. Andre Bessette Catholic Church, 601 W. Burnside St., Portland, OR 97209.
