University of Portland will host John O’Callaghan, a professor at University of Notre Dame who will lecture on issues related to Terrance Malick’s film "The Tree of Life." The free event, which includes showing of the film, begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 in Buckley Center Auditorium on campus.
Malick is considered one of the greatest filmmakers of the era. "The Tree of Life" tells the story of a man who retraces the path of his life in an effort to come to grips with the death of his younger brother. Through the narrative, Malick opens questions about faith, family, nature and grace.
O’Callaghan, an associate professor of Philosophy at Notre Dame and a permanent member of the Pontifical Council on Thomas Aquinas, has studied the film as it relates to the story of The Confessions of St. Augustine.
