Kathleen Shew, Clara Kiss, Collin Pierce, Angela Dunham and Megan Moore meet in the Forest of Arden in Valley Catholic's science-fiction inspired version of production of "As You Like It."
BEAVERTON — It’s Shakespeare with a modern twist as Valley Catholic presents “As You Like it” set in the science-fiction world of Victorian Steampunk.
The production will be presented at Valley Catholic High School Nov. 1-3 and 8-10. Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 7 p.m. Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m.
The story follows a young woman, Rosalind, as she escapes to the Forest of Arden after being banished from the court by her uncle, the usurping Duke Frederick. Her father, the rightful ruler, has also been exiled to the Forest of Arden with his court. Accompanied by her cousin and a court jester, Rosalind disguises herself as a boy, hoping to avoid the dangers of the woods. There she runs into the exiled Orlando, who has fallen in love with Rosalind after a brief meeting but needs instruction on how to court her. Can Rosalind find love while in disguise?
Ginnie Sutfin, director, is excited by how the Steampunk genre brings one of Shakespeare’s most famous lines to life: “All the world’s a stage, and the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts,” Sutfin said, “Setting the Prince’s world in Victorian English makes a great contrast with the events in the Forest of Arden. Love. Hidden identity. Forgiveness. As You Like It has it all.”
