Flutist headed to state
Sara Hedberg, a St. Mary's Academy sophomore and flutist, took first place in this year's district music contest. She will go on to compete in the state solo music championships at Lewis & Clark College on May 4.
Hedberg, a 16-year-old Southwest Portland resident, was among eight St. Mary's musicians competing in the district competition last month. In the ensemble division of the district competition, the vocal quartet of Juliet Anderson, Charlotte Umanoff, Sandra Vance and Madison Wray took first place.
"It is a mix of dedication, passion and rehearsal that results in talent — it is not something that one is just born with," says Kathy Briggs, director of choral music.
Hedberg is in her eighth year playing the flute. She is a member of St. Mary's Marian Instruments Orchestra and the Portland Youth Conservancy Orchestra.
