Photo wins top prize
A St. Mary's Academy student earned a gold medal in the 2013 National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Lillie Meyer, a junior, earned gold for "Learning to Swim," a digital photograph taken at a downtown Seattle fountain.
Kathy Mitchell, St. Mary's Academy art teacher, credited Meyer and other student photographers for "using the camera to show the viewer a truth beyond outward appearances."
Thirty-four St. Mary's students were honored with regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards this year.
National award winners will be recognized at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 31. Meyer looks forward to seeing other winning artists' work.
"I feel very privileged and honored to be included with such high-caliber work from around the country," she said.
Her winning images was taken in Seattle over the summer, when she attended an intensive photography workshop at Cornish College of the Arts.
