The well-known Portland liturgical choir Cantores in Ecclesia and conductor Blake Applegate usually lead chant and sacred Renaissance polyphony for liturgy. On occasion, they offer a concert like the one set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 at St. Stephen Church, 1112 SE 41st Ave. in Portland.
On the program that afternoon will be music in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary spanning six centuries, from the 15th to the 21st. Highlights include Josquin Desprez’s "Benedicta es, caelorum regina," Charles Villiers Stanford’s "Magnificat for double chorus," and a setting of the "Salve Regina" by the 21st century English composer Gabriel Jackson.
Cantores in Ecclesia has sung in concert and for liturgies at home and abroad, including tours to Mexico, Spain, France, England and Italy, and has recorded compact discs independently and for Oregon Catholic Press.
