Sheherazade cycle featured at UP concert

The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Orchestra will perform Saturday, Oct. 6 on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. The concert is set for Buckley Center Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Nicole Leupp Hanig, the new assistant professor of music, will sing Ravel's Sheherazade song cycle, based on poetry by Tristan Klingsor. Also, UP's double bass instructor and Oregon Symphony bassist, Jason Schooler, performs Bottesini's Concerto in B Minor for Double Bass and Orchestra. The Wind Symphony features new works for band by female composers, including the world premiere of Julie Giroux’s West Wind Overture and the American premiere of Rika Ishige’s Claps Gold. The performance will conclude with Paul Hindemith’s Symphony in B-flat, dedicated to the late UP music professor Roger Doyle.
