Japanese Catholic author considered

University of Portland theology professors Rebecca Gaudino and Holy Cross Father Charlie Gordon will share their interest in theology of literature by Japanese author Shusaku Endo. Their talk is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 in the Mago Hunt Theatre Recital Hall on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd.
The discussion will follow two of Endo’s books, Deep River and Silence. Endo had an unusual perspective of being Japanese and Catholic while living in Japan following World War II. His Catholic faith was often a central feature in his work, which introduced characters struggling with complex moral issues in stories that dealt with doubt, abandonment, human freedom, and the power of Christian redemption.
