Academy students win science title
St. Mary's Academy captured its eighth Oregon Science Olympiad championship this spring. Three teams represented St. Mary’s at the competition, placing first, fourth and fifth overall. The varsity team now will go on to represent Oregon at the Science Olympiad National Tournament in May at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The only all-female team at the Oregon Science Olympiad, the girls took 34 medals in 23 events held at Oregon State University.

Update: Tech in Catholic classrooms has more pros than cons
Over the past three years, Catholic schools in Oregon have gone through an education revolution. Officials have introduced laptops and tablets into classrooms, with many schools giving students their own devices, even in primary grades. At Catholic high schools, iPads for students to use and take home are close to universal.

Soccer rematch set
An epic Oregon City soccer game is up for a rematch 12:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, April 22.

Father Maxy D’Costa, pastor of St. John the Apostle Parish, is a skilled soccer player who will lead a team of students in a friendly but spirited contest against a student team lead by Mary Haluska, vice principal and physical education teacher. Team Maxy pulled off a close win last year.

University of Portland commencement speakers, honorees
The University of Portland has announced the honorees to be recognized during commencement ceremonies set for May 1. Because of an increase in numbers, the university will hold two ceremonies that day, one at 10 a.m., the other at 2 p.m.
Receiving the university’s highest honor, the Christus Magister medal, is D. Allen Lund and his wife, Kathleen, of Pasadena, Calif.

St. John Fisher eighth graders visit the Grotto
Eighth graders from St. John Fisher School in Southwest Portland made a pilgrimage to the Grotto March 18. They learned about the famous sanctuary and St. Peregrine, the medieval Servite friar who became the patron saint of those who suffer from cancer.

De La Salle wrestlers get to state
The De La Salle North Catholic High School wrestling squad sent sophomore Elsy Herrera to the state tournament, making her the first female wrestler from the school to make it to state. Seniors Julio Saldana and Luis Teran-Bustamante also made it to the tournament. De La Salle North is the only Catholic high school in the state with a wrestling team.

Mount Angel – The Benedictine Sisters of Mt. All-girls team places second in Science Olympiad
CAMAS, Wash. – The only all-girls varsity team in the Camas Science Olympiad Invitational, St. Mary’s Academy placed second out of 30 high school teams. It was the largest high school Science Olympiad invitational tournament on the west coast this year.

Festival welcomes everyone
Hotels and RV parks around McMinnville are filling up. March 11-13 is time for the annual “SIP! McMinnville Wine & Food Classic,” a fundraiser for St. James School held at Evergreen Space Museum. In its 23rd year, the event sends profits directly to the school as people from the area pitch in with donations, sponsorships, advertising and volunteer time. Most of the 500 volunteer slots are filled by St. James parents, teachers, staff and parishioners.

EUGENE — A Marist High School senior, Madisyn Bryant, has received a Future First Citizen scholarship from the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce. Nominees were judged on contributions to their school and community, leadership ability, GPA, and SAT/ACT scores.

Pamplin's brewmeister wins award
Sam Holloway, a professor in the University of Portland’s Pamplin School of Business, has received the Ascendant Scholar Award from the Western Academy of Management. The award is given to faculty members who have a maximum of six to seven years’ of experience and are considered “ascendant” through an academic record that includes their areas of research, teaching, and service.

Marist students and staff collect record amount of food in one week
EUGENE — Marist Catholic High School students and staff have collected a record amount of food to support Catholic Community Services’ mission to move people out of poverty.
In one week, the school gathered 1,592 pounds of food that will be distributed through Catholic Community Services centers in Eugene and Springfield.

UP student claims cyclo-cross title
A University of Portland freshman has won a national collegiate title in cyclo-cross, a sport in which mountain biking meets an obstacle course. Clara Honsinger was a minute ahead of the pack in the January finals of the Division II cyclo-cross race, held in Ashville, N.C. earlier this month.

Holy Child Academy, a school for girls that occupied the site of Our Lady of Lavang Parish, will have an all-class reunion on Saturday, April 16, at St. Therese Church in Northeast Portland. Mass begins at 11 a.m., with Msgr. Tim Murphy presiding. His sister is Holy Child alumna. A luncheon will be held in the adjoining parish center. Invitations went out to more than 500 alumnae, including the oldest, who is 107.

Brooks Catholic Cemetery: 1894-2015
BROOKS — The 180-year-old Catholic history of Oregon and of the French Prairie area of Marion County is reflected in the names of those buried at Brooks Catholic Cemetery and in the names of their family members buried elsewhere in the Willamette Valley. Their names are found in church registers for St. Paul, St. Louis, Gervais and Brooks Church of the Assumption as compiled by Harriet Duncan Munnick in her seven-volume set, “Catholic Church Records of the Pacific Northwest” and in contemporary newspapers and public records.

Regis grad helps at Korean baby drop box
Carmen Kintz, a 2007 graduate of Regis High School in Stayton, is living and working in Seoul, South Korea. Kintz is teaching English. But along with her after-school teaching position she is volunteering for an overnight shift at a “baby drop box” site.

Catholic school officials want to keep education affordable
Anne McCoy, an accountant, maintains a handful of odd jobs for pay. Her husband Paul, a longshoreman, stays at physical labor despite a bum knee. The McCoys get by with a few old cars.
It’s all to afford Catholic schooling for their four children at La Salle Prep, St. John the Apostle in Oregon City and in college.

St. Rose's early start on the Year of Mercy
St. Rose Parish in Portland began their preparations for the Year of Mercy early. It was time for spring cleaning in May of 2014 when the discovery of a once stolen, defiled and damaged tabernacle in a sacristy cupboard began a series of events that led to a visit from  Archbishop Alexander Sample and the creation of a new, intimate place for prayer at St. Rose.

Jesuit and St. Mary’s Academy are among the 17 schools statewide with teams participating in the 30th annual Oregon Mock Trial state competition. The competition takes place over two days this weekend, with schools from as far away as Baker City and Grants Pass traveling to compete.

Rwandan survivor to lead St. John Fisher retreat
Immaculée Ilibagiza, a Rwandan genocide survivor, will lead a Year of Mercy retreat at St. John Fisher Parish next month. The two day retreat takes place 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, April 29 (doors open at 4 p.m.), and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday April 30. (Doors will open at 8:30 a.m.)

Donate and buy books at St. Henry, Gresham
GRESHAM — A used book and media sale will be held at St. Henry Parish Saturday and Sunday, April 2- 3. Books, DVDs and CDs will be available, priced from 50 cents to $3. Donations can be dropped off at St. Henry’s parish office March 29-31 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Proceeds will go to purchasing books and media for the parish library.
The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the gym across the street from the church at 346 NW First St.

Paint for St. Anthony, Waldport
St. Anthony in Waldport has received new paint, but parishioners report that their Oregon coastal weather did not make it easy.  Painting commenced in November last year, and was not completed until the end of January.

Four Gospels in three hours in Astoria
Father Ben Innes will teach a presentation of the four Gospels at 7 p.m. over three consecutive Tuesday nights, March 1, 8, and 15, at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, in the auditorium located at Grand and 14th streets in Astoria. Topics to be covered include origin and dates of the Gospels, a comparison of the Gospel writers, their styles and messages. Primarily participants will compare and contrast different Gospel stories and highlighting the nuances of the Gospel authors.
