Italian Nativity tradition comes to the Madeleine
Inside the doors of the Madeleine Parish hall, holiday revelers will find a miniature scene with tiny intricate Christmas trees, soft, white snow and tiny, busy people enjoying their lives. The display is called a presepio. The scenes are a tradition in Italy, where Pino Pecoraro grew up.

Molalla parish offers refuge to homeless
To serve homeless members of their community, a coalition of community volunteers launched a warming center at St. James Church in Molalla. When temperatures drop below freezing or severely inclement weather hits, the parish hall opens so people who are homeless in this area of Clackamas County can take shelter.

Academy music students recognized
Eight St. Mary’s Academy students have been selected to sing in the Oregon Music Educator’s All-State Choir, and one freshman has been accepted into the Oregon Music Educator’s All-State Orchestra. The nine students will be joining some of the best student-musicians from across the state to perform at the Oregon Music Education Association Conference on Sunday, Jan. 18 in Eugene.

Fund has helped Salem Catholic school students for decades
The Beth Fajer Memorial Fund was established in November 1986 and for 28 years has provided scholarships to students at St. Vincent de Paul School here. The fund has generated more than $80,000 in awards.

Seventy-six St. Agatha middle school students gave back to local and state community members in need by volunteering at the Oregon Food Bank this fall. Students, staff and parents sorted more than 5,000 pounds of pinto beans, adding ingredient labels and instructions on how to cook and serve.

Kids pick pumpkins for fundraiser
St. Andrew’s Youth Ministry members visited the pumpkin patch recently. Unlike many others who participate in this annual October tradition, these kids were there to work.
Every year for the past 10 years, organic farmer and St. Andrew’s parishioner Jim Bronec has donated two enormous crates of pumpkins. Proceeds from sales benefit the parish’s youth ministry program.
