Vandals strike twice at Holy Rosary Parish
Nestled along the side of the church at Portland’s Holy Rosary Parish sits a grotto, bordered by rock and greenery. Until the morning of May 11, the grotto held a statue of Mary. That is, until in the middle of the night, someone came and grabbed the statue, pulling it to the ground in pieces. The broken statue resulted in the image being separated from the pedestal on which it sat.

A return to history in Northeast Portland
On June 14 at 6 p.m., St. Rose School will graduate its first class in 30 years — under that name. The ceremony will take place at St. Rose of Lima Church.

With a constant 104-year history, the school spent three decades under the name Archbishop Howard School. The change originally occurred in 1986, when the Archdiocese of Portland restructured and merged St. Rose and St. Charles schools, strengthening their financial viability for the future. In September 2016 and with permission from Archbishop Alexander Sample, the St. Rose name was restored as it was when founded in 1913. Returning to its given name is a step toward a more unified campus vision for St. Rose of Lima Parish and the school.

What happens in the summer at St. Agatha School in Southeast Portland is a little busier than average, but mostly typical. Maintenance supervisor Tony Medina cleans rooms, floors, gym, roof and grounds. Workers will install a new playground, put fresh stain on cedar siding, paint the interior, repair windows, replace gutters and put in a new key card system. Cement experts will work on the sidewalks.
