Six schools unite to feed local kids in need
Six schools in the Portland area recently competed to see who could bring in the most macaroni and cheese to help feed local children in need. The 3rd annual Mac Attack, which ran May 13-24, raised 2,854 pounds of macaroni and cheese to be distributed by the Portland Police Sunshine Division.

The University of Portland will host a conference, “The Impact of Catholic Education in America: Past, Present, and Future,” Thursday through Saturday, June 20-22. The conference will highlight the history of Catholic education in America and examine what has allowed Catholic schools to flourish across the nation.

As a child growing up in Teltele, Ethiopia, young Melaku Arega became very ill. His mother carried her 8-year-old boy on her back to find help, but it was a Sunday, and the clinics in town were closed.

St. Anthony School invites all former students, parents, teachers, staff and friends to the fourth annual St. Anthony All School Reunion on Saturday, June 22. Due to the construction of the new community center at St. Anthony, the reunion will be held in the banquet rooms at Ernesto’s Italian Restaurant, 8455 SW Apple Way, in Portland near Jesuit High School.

Jesuit auction raises $710,000
The annual auction at Jesuit High School in May raised $710,000 of gross revenue. Theme of the 45th annual auction was "Remember. Celebrate. Believe." Held in the school's gym, transformed for the evening, the event was chaired by Rose Kilpatrick and Gigi Van Rysselberghe.

Latin Mass offered as outreach in Veneta

The Latin Mass formed during the counter-Reformation and used for about 500 years will be offered weekly at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Veneta. The pastor of St. Catherine likens the move to offering Mass in Spanish for Catholics who prefer to pray in that language.

Neal Karo thinks it's easier to be an active Catholic in a small church than in a big one. He and wife Susan are lay caretakers of St. Helen Mission in Brownsville, faith home of 70 people in a town of 1,700 souls.

School marking centennial
On November 24, 1913, in a small house, a couple of blocks away from the current St. Rose Church in Northeast Portland, two Holy Child Sisters, Mother Mary Genevieve and Mother Mary Bernadette, established a school to serve the children of St. Rose Parish. The school grew into what is now called Archbishop Howard School at St. Rose.

Subway's spokesman meets Catholic school students
Jared Fogle, the man who lost weight eating Subway sandwiches and testifies about it on commercials, was in Portland for the American Heart Association’s Heart and Stroke Walk in mid-May. Before the walk, he stopped by St. John Fisher School in Southwest Portland to talk to the 230 students about healthy eating and exercise.

Being busy and excelling part of Marist culture
Each year, the dairy farmers of Oregon track the grade-point averages of students on high school sports teams and activity groups. The cooperative, famous for its "Got Milk?" slogan, gives sweatshirts and certificates to squads with the highest cumulative grades.

St. Mary's names new principal
St. Mary's Academy has appointed Kelli Clark as the school's new principal. Clark, who most recently served as program director and principal of Open Meadow High School, will assume leadership of St. Mary's curricular and co-curricular programs this summer. She replaces Patricia Barr, who served as principal for 12 years and prior to that as a member of the English department.

Wrapping up centennial year

St. Philip Neri celebrated the final Mass of its centenary celebrations last week. The Mass was concelebrated by former pastors, and the president of the Paulist Order, Paulist Father Michael McGarry. More than 250 people attended the Mass.

SALEM — On Saturday, June 8, Blanchet School’s 2013 graduates will receive diplomas during a ceremony set for 2 p.m. at the campus. Valedictorians are Kelsey Nanneman, Nicholas Ditzler and Samantha Belleque. Salutatorian is Cassandra Farrell. They will hear one of their most admired and respected teachers, Barb Schreiber, deliver the commencement address.

While last year’s Poverty Awareness Day at St. Mary’s Academy focused on economic disparities at a global level, the 2013 event stuck closer to home. Workshops focused on Portland and ranged from low-income housing to employment outlook to immigration to health care.

Valley Catholic early learning school seen as model
BEAVERTON — Oregon's governor wants every student in the state to graduate from high school in the future — starting with this year's kindergartners. The strategy begins with the youngest children, so a state official visited Valley Catholic Early Learning School here April 18 to see a model that seems to be working for high school seniors of the future.

GRANTS PASS — Eighth grade graduation for St. Anne School is set for 8 a.m. Thursday, June 13, in the church. Valedictorian is Holly Hermes, who currently has a 4.03 grade-point average. Staff say Hermes is "outstanding" in being a faith-fill person, a well-rounded individual, a responsible citizen and a lifelong learner.

A basket full of bread, peanut butter and jelly, and hot cocoa is placed in front of the altar at Jesuit High School’s Friday liturgies each month along with the Eucharist. The woven basket demonstrates one of the most important values that Jesuit emphasizes: being men and women for others.

Holy Cross Father Ron Raab will celebrate his final Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at St. André Bessette Church. After serving in Portland since 2002, the priest will transfer to a parish in Colorado Springs, Colo. Breakfast will be served after Mass.

Fifth graders graduate from St. James
MCMINNVILLE —St. James Parish will celebrate the graduation of their students at 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 14, during the school Mass, followed by a reception. Graduates will be honored with a party and dinner afterwards. As is tradition, the song “Pass it On” will be sung at the Mass. This song asks the fourth-graders to pass on the "love of God" after the fifth graders are gone.

A year of firsts and memories for Holy Cross graduates
The class of 2013 from Holy Cross was the school's first to carry out a yearlong capstone project, which included a year of Christian service, plus a paper and PowerPoint presentation reflecting on the experience. Students did everything from care for abandoned dogs to visit elderly people.

Thankful St. Clare eighth graders to graduate June 7
Eighth-graders at St. Clare School will soon join the ranks of fellow alumni at a special graduation ceremony set for 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, in the church. It’s both an exciting and bittersweet time as students look forward to meeting new friends and challenges, and say goodbye to friends, teachers and classrooms they’ve come to know over the years.

Grant will help renovate Marylhurst chapel
The E. L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno, Nevada, has awarded Marylhurst University a grant of more than $240,000 to help fund the renovation and restoration of the E. L. Wiegand Hall Chapel. The chapel is located in Marylhurst’s administration building, and was named after the foundation in 1989 to recognize its first grant to the university.
