Sometimes Judy Locher, a parishioner at St. Anne’s in Grants Pass, starts her spirituality and art therapy group at the parish with a poem  like “Beannach” (Blessing) from the late Irish poet John O’Donohue:

Camp Howard: Looking to the future
The majority of Camp Howard's buildings were built quickly during the spring of 1953 in order to be up and running for the first camping season that summer.  They have served generations of campers well, but the usefulness of many of the buildings has been exhausted.

Thankful for 133 years on Founders Day
The public is invited to attend the 12th Annual Founders' Day Concert and Celebration at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Benedictine Sisters' Queen of Angels Monastery Chapel. The Benedictine Sisters of Mount Angel and friends present the free concert to celebrate and thank God for the sisters' 133-year history of community life and service to others. The Benedictine Sisters were established as a religious community in Oregon on Oct. 30, 1882.

Nativity student impresses adults

Austin Rodriguez is a rising eighth grader at St. Andrew Nativity School in Northeast Portland.
Austin’s attendance at Nativity is viewed as a blessing by his family, and one that is not taken lightly. Austin commutes between Nativity and his home in outer Northeast Portland on a daily basis. He walks to the MAX, rides to the transit center, and catches a bus. The trip takes an hour and a half. Both ways. He has done this journey every day since he was in 6th grade.

Transitions at Christ the King
During the back to school barbecue and ice cream social hosted by Christ the King School’s Parent Community Organization last month, students and families visited with each other and took tours of the newly remodeled 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-grade classrooms. The classrooms complete the school’s “Foundations In Faith Classroom Renovation Project,” which began three years ago.

New staff, high hopes in McMinnville

MCMINNVILLE — St. James School has added four new staff members.

Kindergarten teacher is Leilani Larson. She comes with several years of experience and says she has a great love for primary children. Maura Okuley is new art teacher. She previously taught art at St. Anthony in Tigard.  Lisa Hartman and Tricia Fisher join the preschool staff. Both have had an array of experiences with that age group.

St. Anne, Dallas, Altar Society turns 80
Nearly 100 women celebrated the 80th anniversary of St. Anne’s Altar Society last month, with four Knights of Columbus, dressed in their best tuxedos, serving the women at an afternoon tea.

St. Clare increases commitment
St. Clare School in Southwest Portland is increasing its commitment to inclusive education by adding staff to support students with learning differences. St. Clare’s Learning Specialist Program, more than a decade old, now provides resources five days a week with the addition of veteran Catholic educator, Jean Mullen.  St. Clare’s program is designed to help each student feel respected and be successful at school.

Theme of Jesuit's year: Religious
On Aug. 31, Jesuit High School opened its doors to begin its 60th year. Theme for the school year, taken from the “Profile of the Jesuit High School Graduate at Graduation,” is “Religious,” and the spiritual quote that is the guide for the year is taken from Sister Ita Ford, a Maryknoll sister who was martyred for the faith in El Salvador in 1980. Just weeks before her death, Sister Ita wrote to her young niece, “I hope you can come to find that which gives life a deep meaning for you.”

There’s youthful zeal crackling in the air at Holy Cross School in North Portland. Four new young teachers have joined the faculty and are a complement to the corps of experienced teachers.

In addition to the new band, music teacher Tracie Swanson provides St. Agatha students with general music classes and leads the school’s church choir.

“The rigor of learning a band instrument benefits the student both academically and emotionally,” Swanson says. “Students feel proud of themselves when they hear how their well-rehearsed part fits into the final product.”

New accessible science room at St. Matthew
When students returned to St. Matthew Catholic School after summer break, they were greeted with an addition to their building: a science room was constructed over the summer, thanks to support from St. Matthew parishioners, parents and families, and many other school supporters. Funds for the new room were provided by a combination of capital campaign donations and proceeds from past auction paddle-raisers.

O'Hara refreshes courtyard
At the heart of O’Hara Catholic School here is a large courtyard designed and landscaped by the St. Francis Catholic High School class of 1965. Through the years, the landscaping had become overgrown and in need of attention. This summer, a former student and donor families transformed part of the courtyard as the first phase of a renewal project.

Awakening Faith program connects
The Returning Catholic Ministry at Our Lady of the Lake Church invites inactive and semi-active Catholics to what they expect to be a lively discussion of faith. “Awakening Faith” sessions run from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Oct 7 through Dec. 9.  Four additional weeks are optional and would run Wednesdays, Dec. 9 - 30.  Sessions will be held in the parish center library, 650 A Ave., Lake Oswego 97034.

Parishioners from Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, Rainier; St. Mary’s, Shaw; and St. Clare and Ascension, Portland, came to St. John the Baptist, Milwaukie, for evening prayer and to kick-off a weekend celebrating the centenary of the St. Barbara Province, which includes the Archdiocese of Portland.

The 2015-‘16 theme for St. Cecilia School here is “Pray. Learn. Serve.”

Prayer is the beginning of each St. Cecilia School day. The following prayer is recited aloud school-wide: “We thank you, God, for the gift of this new day. Help us to pray. Help us to learn. Help us to serve. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

Quilt Fair continues tradition
St. Mary, Vernonia, offers its 45th annual quilt fair Sept. 17-20. In addition to quilts, there are locally-made crafts for sale, usually including gloves, scarves, jewelry and more. The quilts range from baby quilts to works of art, including a Star of Bethlehem quilt being raffled for $1 a ticket. The event supports a third of St. Mary’s budgetary needs. Admission is $1, and the hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a lunch served at 11 a.m.

Worshipers gather for World Day of Prayer for the Creation
Worshipers gathered on Sept. 1 for the World Day of Prayer at St. Philip Neri Church in Portland. Pope Francis explained that the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation follows the Orthodox Church, which has for the past 25 years dedicated the day to care for creation. Sept. 1 is the first day of the new year in the Orthodox liturgical calendar.

LAKE OSWEGO — Our Lady of the Lake Parish here “ROLL”ed out quite a good time last Sunday with its Ride with Our Lady of the Lake Festival (ROLL). Coinciding with the parish’s annual picnic, the event hosted Archbishop Alexander Sample who celebrated the 11 a.m. Mass before joining pastor Father John Kerns, parochial vicar Father Charles Wood and dozens of parishioners for two rides through the city. The archbishop blessed bicycles before the ride.

St. Edward, Keizer, keeps 49-year Oktoberfest tradition
This September brings Mount Angel’s 50th Oktoberfest (Sept. 17-20), and the 49th year that St. Edward, Keizer, has had a booth. Keven Fredinburg, a chairman, is preparing for his four-day stint at the family festival.
He and two others will go to Mount Angel on Wednesday afternoon, Sept 16, to set up.
They won’t leave until Sunday night.
St. Edward’s is known for Berliner sandwiches at Oktoberfest, a concoction of beef, pork, mustard and lettuce on rye bread.

Travel brings gratitude for home
When Lindy McDonald, pastoral council president at St. Philip Benizi Parish in Oregon City, visited Australia last summer she was excited, thinking she’d find even stronger faith communities than she was familiar with here in Oregon. That’s because she had left a strong Catholic Australian culture as a 19-year-old to come to the United States.

New year, new name
De La Salle North Catholic High School’s Corporate Internship Program will now be called the Corporate Work Study Program. School officials say they changed "internship" to "work study" to express what student workers do each week when they head to job placements.
Officials say the change reflects the difference between “going to work” and “going to work to learn.”

Historic St. Patrick's: weddings and prayer tips
Summers bring weddings every week to Portland’s oldest church, photogenic St. Patrick’s. The staff still thinks about already or not-yet-married parishioners, though. They offered some tips for staying in spiritual shape this summer in the bulletin, beginning with a quote from Pope John Paul II: “… only in silence does man succeed in hearing in the depth of his conscience the voice of God, which really makes him free. And vacations can help us rediscover and cultivate this indispensable interior dimension of human life.”
Tips included the importance of continuing to go to Confession at least once a month, wherever you are.

Drive to bring bikes to Togo
Marylhurst University and skin-care company Alaffia are giving Oregonians the chance to help students in Togo, West Africa — and to make room in their garages. Public donations of old and unwanted adult bicycles will be accepted at Marylhurst 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. A gift basket of Alaffia products will be raffled off during the event.

Over the years it became clear that too many people didn’t associate Archbishop Howard School’s teams — or the school — with St. Rose Parish. “We’d go to CYO games and people would ask us if we were from Vancouver or Salem,” says Gina Yazzolino, development director at the school.

St. Peter's message: 'Bee happy!'
St. Peter Parish took part in the New berg Old Fashioned Festival with a float in the parade on Saturday, July 25. A score of parishioners of all ages waved to the crowds from their brightly colored perches on the float. Proverbs 15:13, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful…” inspired the float’s theme, along with Father John Amsberry’s trademark “You are loved!”
