SALEM — The Salem Catholic Schools Foundation has awarded $318,000 in grants. Kevin Mannix, foundation president, mailed and or hand-delivered checks to St. Joseph, St. Vincent de Paul, Queen of Peace and Blanchet Catholic.
The funds given to St. Joseph will finalize funding for a new heating system and fund a summer education program. Funds also included a scholarship in honor of Joe Dodd and support for an overhaul of the school’s security system.
The grants given to St. Vincent de Paul will aid in tuition assistance and two scholarships named in honor of Dodd and Beth Fajer.
The grants given to Blanchet provide tuition assistance for students and provide funds for “The Gathering,” an August event for alumni from two former Salem Catholic schools — Sacred Heart Academy and Serra Catholic School.
The foundation granted funds to Queen of Peace for tuition assistance and a scholarship named in honor of Dodd.
Grants also fund an artist-in-residence program to serve the schools. Last year, the foundation hired Carol Ann Manzi, an opera singer, as ongoing artist-in-residence to build up music programs. Already, Manzi has helped put together musical showcases for the schools and, more recently, assisted Blanchet students in their performance of the musical “Cinderella.” Next school year, Manzi will expand her activities to include work with students at Sacred Heart School in Gervais.
