Five schools in the Portland area competed to bring the most macaroni and cheese, which will be distributed to hungry families.

The fourth annual Mac Attack, which was held in May, raised 4,035 pounds of macaroni and cheese to be distributed by the Portland Police Sunshine Division, the area’s only 24-7 food bank. This year, participating schools included St. Cecilia, Cathedral, All Saints and St. Pius. The winning school, however, was St. John Fisher School.

Delanie Strauss, a former student at St. John Fisher, started the Mac Attack competition. This year, as a freshman at Central Catholic, she coordinated the event in collaboration with her younger sister, Cara, who is a sixth-grader at St. John Fisher.

“It would be great to have twice the number of schools participate,” Delanie said. “The more schools we have, the more food we can raise and the more kids we can help. Kids helping kids is our goal.”
