New UP fitness center is named after outgoing president, Fr. William Beauchamp.
A groundbreaking ceremony last month was the beginning of the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, named for retiring University of Portland president Holy Cross Father William Beauchamp.
The $23 million center — funded by donors, not tuition — is set to open in early fall 2015. Design by 360 Architecture, Dan Danielson and Soderstrom Architects, and SKANSKA call for a modern facility.
Father Beauchamp announced last year he is stepping down as president at the end of June 2014.
“To have my name associated forevermore with our students’ joy and health – that is a gift beyond measure,” Father Beauchamp said.
The center’s main level will have three gyms. There will also be office space and an outdoor recreation and bike shop. Overlooking the main floor will be treadmills and stationary bikes. Three wood floor studios will host spin and yoga classes and there will be a weight room. Suspended above all three recreational gyms will be an eighth-mile running track.
