St. Mary’s Academy holds graduation at noon, Saturday, May 31, at the University of Portland Chiles Center. Valedictorians are Catherine Welgan and Sienna Li and salutatorian is Lindsey Byrne.

The celebration of seniors is possible, they know, because of the backing of donors.

The 26th annual auction, Roman Holiday, raised more than $900,000, the largest amount in the event's history and $100,000 over last year. More than 700 guests took part.

"Participation in this event helps reaffirm the belief that St. Mary's Academy transforms students' lives by combining the best features of a Catholic high school with the opportunities offered by an all-girls environment,” said Christina Friedhoff, the school’s president.

The record-breaking achievement is the culmination of hours of planning by volunteers, including the event co-chairs: Carolyn DeLany-Reif, Peggy Hinshaw, Marypat Hedberg, and Annie White.

"We are honored and grateful to have been involved in preparing for the auction alongside so many dedicated and talented parent volunteers and the capable and hardworking staff at St. Mary's," the co-chairs said. "Countless thoughtful gestures and kind offerings blessed this event.”

Rebecca Webb, Portland Radio Project director, served as the evening's mistress of ceremonies. She kept the crowd entertained and raising their paddles high.

Among the evening's highlights was Bids for Kids, an opportunity to donate to the school's tuition assistance program. Lauren Kawa Funk, St. Mary's Academy director of admissions, led the appeal. Bids for Kids raised more than $300,000 in support of the 42 percent of St. Mary's students who receive financial aid. A $100,000 matching grant came from the B.P., Lester and Regina John Foundation, as well as Mary Boyle, a St. Mary's Academy alumna and her husband, Tim Boyle.
