MILWAUKIE — Almost 150 seniors will set off from La Salle Prep at ceremonies set for next month. A baccalaureate Mass is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, at St. John the Baptist Church here. Commencement begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14 at Rolling Hills Community Church, 3550 SW Borland Rd., Tualatin.

Valedictorians are Jacqueline Breunig, Lillian L. Bengtson and Jason Nguyen. Salutatorian is Jacob Bieker.

Seniors were a major part of La Salle Prep’s Lenten fundraiser. Students raised more than $6,400 for La Salle’s twin school, Mwangaza College, located in Nakuru, Kenya. The effort was part of an annual campaign sponsored by the North American Lasallian school network to encourage students to learn about their twin schools in Africa while raising funds for them.

La Salle’s student council inspired students and teachers to give something up or do something extra to help raise money for Mwangaza College, a vocational school that provides Kenyans with the opportunity to be prepared for a specific career and break out of the cycle of poverty and lack of education.

Donations were collected at La Salle through a competition between fourth period classes. Students also had the opportunity to learn more about Mwangaza College each day with a Fact of the Day about the college. During the six weeks of Lent, La Salle’s students learned how much they have in common with their brothers and sisters in Africa and how they are united as one Lasallian family.

La Salle Prep students have many opportunities throughout their four years on campus to learn about people and places around the world. Service immersion and language immersion trips provide students with authentic learning experiences in France, Mexico, Germany and Costa Rica. Currently, there are more than 800,000 Lasallian students around the world.
