Focus Today’s Perry Atkinson interviews Joyce Marks about protecting children from sex crimes.

MEDFORD — Joyce Marks, director of ministries and volunteers at Shepherd of the Valley Parish in Central Point, will teach a workshop on the issue of sex trafficking at the NextGen ministry conference Saturday, May 10, at Cascade Christian High School.

Marks, a former police officer and sex crimes detective, is passionate about advocating for women and children who are victims of trafficking and other sex crimes.

Coordinated by the Rogue Valley Children’s Ministry Network, the conference is an ecumenical Christian ministry training opportunity for all church leaders who work with children. Fifteen workshops are divided into five tracks that cater to those who work with elementary school-age children, preschoolers, teenagers and special ministries, or for people who are administrators.

Marks will discuss the curriculum from Shared Hope International, which Archdiocese of Portland churches use to train volunteers and staff on recognizing signs that children are at risk of being trafficked or are being trafficked.

“It is through being involved in this ecumenical program I am able to bring the rich gifts of the Catholic Church through an open dialog, accessing a greater sphere of influence and audience where I can charitably correct misinformation and confusion about our faith and meet a lot of wonderful people who support me and my ministry,” Marks said.

To register for the conference, log on to www.roguevalleykids.org.

The school is at 855 Chevy Way, in Medford.

Joyce Marks shares more about the conference and the issue of sex trafficking in an interview with The Dove Christian radio.
