Author of Overwhelmed to speak at UP
Brigid Schulte — University of Portland alumna, Portland native and award-winning Washington Post journalist — has a popular new book out. Overwhelmed: Work, Love And Play When No One Has The Time is currently the top-selling business book on Amazon and is among the top-ten best-selling books overall on the world’s largest online retailer. Overwhelmed explores time pressure, parenting, work and modern life.
Schulte will speak at UP Wednesday, April 9, in the Bauccio Commons on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. There will be a reception at 6:30 p.m. with a lecture to follow at 7:30 p.m. All are invited to attend at no charge.
Schulte, a mother of two, began the journey of writing Overwhelmed by accident after a time-use researcher insisted that she, like all American women, had 30 hours of leisure each week. Stunned, she accepted his challenge to keep a time diary and began a journey that would take her from the depths of what she described as the "time confetti" of her days to Yale, where neuroscientists are finding that feeling overwhelmed is actually shrinking our brains.
Schulte graduated from UP in 1984 and Columbia School of Journalism in 1987. She has been a reporter at the Washington Post since 1999, and currently covers social issues.
