ALBANY — St. Mary Parish hasn’t had a vigil candle shrine in the church since Oct. 29, 1989, when the church was burned to the ground (not by a vigil candle accident, but arson).

The parish’s new vigil candles pose no risk of causing another fire; they are electric. Most of the flameless candles are “ignited” by a small button and turn off automatically after a few hours. Parish leadership hopes the addition to the church will enhance community members’ prayer life.
