VERBOORT — Each year during Catholic Schools Week, Visitation School presents the Distinguished Alumni Award for dedicated service, generous support and living the Catholic faith. Lyle Spiesschaert, 1961 graduate of Visitation, is the 2014 winner.

Spiesschaert, a Forest Grove businessman and local farmer, supports many areas of the local community including serving as chair of the Visitation Cemetery Committee, and vice chair of the Washington County Fairgrounds Boosters.

Spiesschaert praises Visitation School for preparing him for his life of service. He received a masters in educational psychology from the University of Arizona in 1981 before returning in 1984 to Verboort, where manages his family farm.

Spiesschaert has been an active member of Visitation Church. He was key in a project to install post lanterns that line Visitation Road and lighting improvements throughout the campus. Spiesschaert runs the music and sound system at the massive Verboort Sausage Festival the first Saturday in November. He works loing hours on beautification projects around campus, and puts up outdoor Christmas decorations.

As chair of the cemetery committee, he has led an expansion project.

Spiesschaert says he wants Visitation School to be successful. He believes the school plays a key role in the growing community.

“Lyle is always there to help with whatever we need,” says St. Mary Sister Clare Vandecoevering, long associated with the school. Lyle says he has a sense of responsibility to give back to Visitation.
