The morning after the Philippines Super Typhoon, the 23 students in Jackie Brocka’s kindergarten class at St. Therese School in Northeast Portland prayed for all the people who were still waiting for help from the storm.
“We looked at some aerial pictures of the devastation in the Philippines and the kids were very surprised to see the before and after pictures of the storm damage. I think they really made a connection to what we were praying for…. We talked about what we could do to help,” said Brocka.
The next day, the children brought in their piggy banks, allowances and change and raised more than $100 the first day. They also filled an entire box full of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap to send overseas. The little class ended up raising more than $400 and inspired the school to raise more than $1,000.
“We have a large Filipino community here at St. Therese and the impact of the storm is felt around our school," Brocka says. "One of our favorite songs at church is called 'Never Too Young' and the message definitely resonated.”
