De La Salle president takes new post
Matt Powell, president of De La Salle North Catholic High School, has been appointed executive director of the Lasallian Christian Brothers Foundation in Napa, Calif. Powell will take over the helm of the new non-profit organization in June and work to fund education for needy students and support the Brothers.
A 1984 graduate of the University of Portland, Powell has served in Lasallian schools for 19 years. He began as a teacher, counselor, and campus ministry director at La Salle High School (now La Salle Catholic College Preparatory) from 1984-'88. After a successful decade working in the Oregon business sector, he returned to La Salle as vice principal and dean of students.
In 2000, Powell became the project coordinator for the Christian Brothers’ startup of De La Salle North Catholic High School in North Portland. The vision was to provide a way for low-income urban youth in Portland to get a college-preparatory education. When the school opened in 2001, Powell became founding President.
For the past 13 years, Powell and De La Salle have worked with local businesses who hire students as interns and help pay the cost of education.
In his spare time, Powell serves on various educational boards and school advisory councils, has volunteered as an athletic director and coach for his local CYO, and is a eucharistic minister and lector at Holy Family Parish. He and his wife Jamie have three children.
“It has been a blessing to be involved with De La Salle for the past 14 years," Powell says. "It has been an honor to have worked with an outstanding group of educators, benefactors, and supporters. I will miss the students and their families. I am excited to continue working to make Lasallian education an option for the underserved.”
De La Salle’s Board of Trustees has initiated a search for Powell’s successor.
