SILVERTON — Catholics here helped a St. Paul Parish family make it to Rome to see their son be ordained as a Legionary of Christ priest on Dec. 14.
In October, parishioners at St. Paul and St. Mary’s, Mount Angel, gathered for a fundraising breakfast, sponsored by the Silverton Knights of Columbus and hosted by the Hare family. Many people pitched in funds to send Father Josef Hare’s family to Rome. Father Hare, 32, is the son of Jim and Annmarie Hare.
In June 1999, Joseph Hare left Oregon to attend the Legionary of Christ Seminary in Cheshire, Conn. After his first years as a novice and earning a humanities degree, Hare was sent to Rome, where he earned a master’s degree in philosophy.
Most recently, Hare had been working with schoolchildren in Caracas, Venezuela, providing spiritual guidance.
As a child, Father Hare remembers being inspired by his parish priest, Father Ed Coleman. The elder clergyman provided an example of closeness and pastoral care. Father Hare remembers Father Coleman showing up on his bicycle to guide the family through difficult times, even staying afterward for a pickup soccer game.
