Students create Christmas mail for their heroes

A teacher at St. Clare School is taking time during the Christmas season to offer art skills and compassion building during classes at the Southwest Portland school.

Students of Marie Acurso are part of the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program, an annual event that brings personal messages and a touch of home to troops during the holiday season. The entire school is participating.

Red Cross delivers tens of thousands of cards to service members, veterans and their families at military hospitals and installations across the country and around the world. Since the program began in 2006, the Red Cross has received and distributed more than 6.5 million cards
