Central Catholic High School celebrated its 74th Christ the King Mass this fall with Archbishop Alexander Sample and 21 visiting priests.
Christ the King is the patron of Central Catholic and the school has celebrated the Feast of Christ the King with a Mass celebrated by the local archbishop since its opening in 1939. This was the first official Mass celebrated by Archbishop Sample at Central Catholic since he became spiritual leader of the Archdiocese of Portland in the spring.
“God has given us the land of milk and honey, let us accept it with open hearts,” was the theme of this year’s Mass, and Archbishop Sample spoke to a captivated crowd of young people about how, as long as they are willing to accept it, a relationship with God is there for the taking.
The school began inviting Portland area priests to concelebrate the Christ the King Mass six years ago in an effort to reach out to local parishes and schools. In addition, a number of Central Catholic alumni are serving as priests in the Portland area, and the school wants to welcome them back to campus.
Central Catholic welcomed more concelebrants than ever to this year’s Mass. Alumni present included Msgr. Don Buxman ’62, Msgr. Art Dernbach ’44, Father Woody Macallister ’78, Jesuit Father Tom McCarthy ’49, Msgr. Gregory Moys ’57, Msgr. Rick Paperini ’69, Father Elwin Schwab ’52 and Father Karl Schray ’57. Additional priests included Father John Amsberry, Jesuit Father Craig Boly, Father Pat Brennan, Paulist Father Charles Brunick, Holy Cross Father John Dougherty, Father John Henderson, Msgr. Richard Huneger, Paulist Father James Kolb, Father Matt Libra, Father John McGrann, Father Joe McMahon, Father Richard Thompson, and Father Peter Smith. As always, Central Catholic’s Msgr. Tim Murphy ‘58, Father David Shaw, and Deacon John Rilatt ’85 were on hand to concelebrate with the archbishop.
