Author and cultural anthropologist Jud Newborn will present a multimedia program at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 in Buckley Center Auditorium on the University of Portland campus. Newborn will deliver the Zahm Lecture, the keynote address for the University of Portland’s academic year.

Newborn’s multimedia presentation, “Speaking Truth to Power,” examines heroes in the fight for human rights in present day and highlights the 70th anniversary of the student-led White Rose anti-Nazi resistance movement. The evening will include images, music and dramatic readings.

Newborn has conducted three decades of research of World War II history about the little known White Rose movement. The White Rose was the name of a group of students who hindered the Gestapo, Nazi Germany's secret police, and infuriated Adolf Hitler, through one of the few effective protest movements against Nazi Germany by Germans. In 1942, two siblings and former Hitler Youth members Sophie and Hans Scholl had leaflets and mass mailings printed and distributed anonymously to educate their fellow about what their regime was doing to Jews throughout Europe.
