St. Francis of Assisi began the new school year with 95 students. There are 13 new families and two new staff members — Kiley Richeson, the physical education instructor, and Steve Kloser, the music teacher.
Richeson comes from a long line of educators in western Washington County. She and her husband and two young children live in Banks. Richeson is also the Banks High School junior varsity coach for basketball and softball.
Kloser is a composer who has taught elementary school music on the east coast. He says he intends to bring his love and knowledge of music to students. He is also working on sparking interest in band. As part of that project, Kloser invited fellow musicians who performed for students.
With help of a matching grant from the archdiocese of Portland, workers are installing new windows on the south side of the main school building. Those replace original windows from the 1950s. Classrooms will be cooler in the warm weather and warmer in the cool weather.
Each week during Monday morning prayer, students will be recognized for living out the school's learning expectations, becoming faith-filled Christians, effective communicators, life-long learners, a self-aware individuals and responsible citizens.
The expectations are posted around the school.
