Central Catholic teacher a moral theology expert

For most high school teachers, summer is time to relax and recharge the batteries.

Not for religion teacher Tim McMonagle.

He spoke on a national stage at the Wisdom and Witness Conference in Dayton, Ohio, an event organized by the National Catholic Educational Association.

McMonagle was asked to discuss how he teaches moral decision making. He held forth on secular ethical theories and how they relate to Catholic moral teachings. Association leaders recognize McMonagle as an expert in moral theology; he was one of the first people invited to speak at the gathering.

McMonagle says he was honored. Now, the Association of Catholic Publishers and the Archdiocese of Baltimore have invited him to present at the Mid-Atlantic Congress in Baltimore.

Sara Bruins has been named Central Catholic’s new assistant principal. With years of experience in special education and administration, Bruins most recently worked as a supervisor at the Multnomah Education Service District. She grew up in Boise, Idaho and received a bachelor’s in special education from the University of Idaho and took her first teaching job with Portland Public Schools in 1997. While in Portland, she earned a master’s in special education from Portland State University.

In 2001, Bruins moved back to Idaho and continued to teach while she earned a doctorate in education from her alma mater, the University of Idaho. In the process, she was certified for K-12 administration and became assistant principal at Eagle High School in Meridian, Idaho.

Bruins moved back to Portland in 2008 and is glad to be back in administration at the high school level.

“I am very excited to have the halls filled with students and to help fulfill the school’s mission," she says. Sara and her husband, Brandon, are members of St. Agatha Parish and have two daughters. Eva is a sixth grader at St. Agatha, and Madison a freshman at Central Catholic.

One staffer is not new, but does have a new job. After 15 years as dean of students, Laura Jaeger is new athletic director. Jaeger  has been a coach and athlete, playing professional basketball in Europe after her college career at Concordia University.

Before joining Central Catholic, she returned to Concordia as head women's basketball coach and adjunct instructor. She began teaching at Central Catholic in 1995 and became dean in 1998. Jaeger is replacing Natalie Osburn, who left Central Catholic to take the principal position at Gladstone High School.

Laura has envisioned herself as an athletic director since early in her career.

"The good news for me is that even though I have a new position, I still get to work with Central Catholic community," she says.

New teachers at Central Catholic include April Robinson in social studies, Leah Taylor in science, Hayes Ferry in Spanish and AnneMarie Perdriau in American Sign Language.
